The Joint meeting held at MoDOT, was a round table discussion with different points of view from various sections of the construction industry. Contractors, Suppliers and Manufacturers affiliated with AGC were in attendance giving varying analysis of the current price problem as well as predictions for the immediate outlook of price increases. MoDOT representatives solicited proposed solutions from the group, as well as suggested steps the DOT can take to better accommodate those parties involved in an effort to help ease the volatility of steel prices into the bid process. MoDOT and AGC will continue to discuss this topic in hopes that a resolution beneficial to all parties can be reached. Due to the volatility in steel prices, MoDOT has requested the Commission to do an early award/reject on any June projects that contain a significant amount of steel (any projects exceeding 25,000 lbs). Recently, the Kansas City Chapter, AGC announced their 2008 Building Excellence Award Winners. Branco Enterprises, Inc. was named the Project of the Year “Green” Winner for construction of the Wildcat Glades Conservation & Audubon Center in Joplin, MO. This Center is a $2.5 million, 10,400 s.f. building located in the 180-acre Wildcat Park and was designed to celebrate its natural surroundings. While “Green” technologies added up-front costs to the building, the Center anticipates utility savings of approx. $6,000-$10,000 annually. Some of the “Green” components include: a green roof which provides natural insulation and acts as a sponge thereby reducing runoff, a 1,000 gallon cistern, geothermal heating and cooling, self-dimming lights, permeable parking area, waterless urinals and motion-activated faucets. The project team was able to divert almost 80% of the construction waste from landfills. Branco provided both preconstruction services and actual management of the project. The Center was completed under budget, with no lost time and no reportable accidents. Read more about the Center. CONGRATULATIONS BRANCO ENTERPRISES!
