Construction Leadership Council Speaker Series
Defensive Communication
Speaker: Mary Sue Love
Employees spend an average of 2.8 hours per week dealing with conflict (Lawler, 2010). While that may not seem like much, in 2008 it added up to about 385 million working days, or 359 billion dollars, in the United States alone (Lawler, 2010). Managers spend even more time managing conflict, up to seven hours a week (Keeping the Peace, 2011). And, 60-80% of all organizational difficulties come from strained employee relationships (Ilgaz, 2014). Yet, all too often individuals avoid conflict (Stone, Patton, & Heen, 2010), ignore it, or let it simmer until it escalates into an angry outburst, damaging relationships and limiting future interactions (Patterson, Grenny, McMillan, & Switzler, 2004). In this workshop, we’ll take a look at our own conflict management and defensive communication styles as we discuss ways to successfully resolve conflict.
