spacer 2009 Hall of Fame Inductee: William "Bill" Herzog

William E. "Bill" Herzog has been selected for induction into the AGC of Missouri Hall of Fame. The official announcement of his selection will be made April 3, 2009 at the AGC of Missouri Annual Convention in Branson.

Mr. Herzog, whose career in construction has spanned more that 60 years, was unanimous selection for this honor. Mr. Herzog is considered an icon amongst his peers in the heavy and public construction industry; Herzog Contracting's impact can be felt in Missouri and throughout North America. Herzog Companies have completed work on projects in 38 states as well as in Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean Islands.

Herzog Contracting's innovations and engineering concepts have had a lasting impact on public construction, becoming a model company for others to pattern themselves after. In 2008 Engineering News-Record (ENR) ranked Herzog Contracting 194 out of 400 "Top Contractors" in the U.S.

Mr. Herzog's dedication to his industry was unprecedented; he was a long time member of AGC of Missouri, serving as its Chairman in 1973. Mr. Herzog was active at the National AGC chapter level serving on or chairing several standing committees, as well as serving as an AGC of America "Life Member" of its Board until his passing on March 6, 2009.

Mr. Herzog was an active member of the AGC of America's Airport Development Committee, the Missouri Business Council, and TRIP (the Road Information Program). Bill's involvement with the Airport Development Committee coincided with his love of aviation; he was an accomplished multi-engine pilot who loved flying his Stearman and Piper Seneca II planes.

Bill Herzog's professional and personal lives were conducted under the standards of Skill, Integrity and Responsibility, the same standards that are synonymous with the AGC; he was a perfect example of what is good in the construction industry.

Bill is survived by his with Trish and resided in Platte City for the past 21 years. Bill has three children, William R. "Randy", Stanley and Meredith (deceased) and six grandchildren.

Even though Bill is not with us, I know he would appreciate this recognition. To accept this award, we have numerous members of the Herzog Contracting Family in attendance with us. Please join me in welcoming Bill Herzog into the AGC of Missouri Hall of Fame.

2009 Hall of Fame Inductee: Irvin Garms

From the deserts of Kuwait, to the downtown chaos of Tokyo, Japan, this contractor has left his mark not only in Missouri but around the Globe.

Irvin H. Garms retired from Potashnik Construction Inc. in 1985 but not before leaving a lasting stamp not only on the AGC but also on the contractors, subs and suppliers that had the pleasure of doing business with him throughout his 50 plus years in construction.

Whether he is was working on a multi-million dollar dredging project in Dubai, or completing five miles of county road in Southeast Missouri, Irv conducted himself with humility and respect; from the Royal family of Dubai to the Sikeston City Public Works Director, Irv did business with his trademark kindness.

While Mr. Garms projects span decades of accomplishment, two in particular stand out when discussing his career.

In the 60's Potashnik built the Dam for the Denver Public Water Board. This Dam, still in use today, backed up the Blue River with five million cubic yards of fill. This moved water through tunnels underneath the Continental Divide; a remarkable engineering feat both in the 1960's as well as today.

The second project was Potashinik's involvement in the eight company venture that created the tallest earthen dam in existence at Oroville, California. This project required the moving of amounts of earth that seem to defy the imagination. At 812' tall this project required the movement of 90 million cubic yards of earth; this earth, moved by specially equipped “dump” rail cars designed by Irv, would today consist of 18,000 rail cars attached end to end, just to give you an idea of the scale of this project. The dam was a marvel which is still in use today, provides the electricity to power 90 % of metro San Francisco, and controls the water flow through the major agricultural area of the San Joaquin Valley.

From the Alyeska Pipeline in Alaska, to canals in Puerto Rico, Mr. Garms conducted business with a handshake and a business philosophy that was as good as his word.

Irv did not restrict his involvement to the field. He was only of the only 2-time Chairman of the AGC of Missouri, serving in that capacity in 1970 and 1971. He was also elected as a National Life Director for AGC of America in 1983. Today, at the age of 93, he serves as the Chairman of the Construction Committee of the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority.

Still to this day a true legend in the industry; please take a moment and help me welcome Mr. Irv Garms as our newest inductee to the AGC of Missouri Hall of Fame.
